Meet Tahlia - Heart Kid Perth Ambassador

It was at the 20-week scan that Tahlia’s family realised there was something amiss with Tahlia’s heart. After another ultrasound, Tahlia was diagnosed with a hypoplastic right ventricle with a large ventricular septal defect, accompanied by a host of other complex diagnoses.

In the first 4 years of life, Tahlia navigated a series of major surgeries, including a PA Banding procedure, Balloon Atrial Septostomy, Cardiac Catheterisation to both sides of the heart, Atrial Septectomy, Fontan, and Pigtail insertion. Each surgery carried with it a blend of hope and trepidation, but through it all, Tahlia's remarkable resilience is a testament to her bravery. And as her dad would tell you, “every day that we have with Tahlia is a special day.”

Tahlia is now 13 years old, standing tall and healthy, and is “a compassionate young lady who is just so brave and strong.”

During Tahlia’s CHD journey, HeartKids has been a steadfast companion to the family. Whether through reassuring phone calls, thoughtful check-ins, or unwavering support, HeartKids has been by their side every step of the way. To dad, Luke, “HeartKids means a lot, they supported us when we needed it most, they reached out and helped us through the situation that was extremely stressful and emotional. We cannot thank them enough for all they continue to do for our family.”

Claire  - Heart Angel 

After being born eight weeks premature, Claire was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) at just three months old and passed away at the age of 10.5 months.

After being born eight weeks premature, at just three months old, Claire was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which would potentially require a heart or heart/lung transplant for a life beyond infancy. After an initial hospitalisation and support from medication, Claire appeared to be improving before falling ill again. After months of fluctuating between wellness and illness, and 24-36 hours on life support, Claire passed away at a little over 10 months old.

After connecting with the HeartKids community through a support coordinator during Claire’s hospital stay, Claire’s family came to rely on the vital support network that HeartKids provided. Claire’s mum, Fran, considers the support of HeartKids to be like a warm blanket wrapped around the family that helps them to feel held and understood through their grief.
